The St. Michaelis cross vault

Church St. Michaelis

The church St. Michaelis, in colloquial speech always referred to as the “Michel”, is the biggest and most famous of Hamburg’s five main churches. In former times sailors could already see the more than 130m-high church tower from a great distance and new that they were home.

What many visitors today don’t know is that the cross vault below the main church is publicly accessible and can be used for events. St. Michaelis’ crypt is one of Europe’s biggest. among many other citizens of Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the church’s builder Ernst Georg Sonnin are buried here.

The location with 300m² under the nave is spacious enough to implement concerts, receptions or “Knight’s Meals” for up to 150 people.
